Chateau de Fouras – Fort Vauban

April 2, 2018

It is often said France has the most beautiful villages in the world.  During my holiday I visited the Province of Nouvelle Aquitaine. And of which Poitou Charentes is a Department.  Therefore in this Region there is a lot to do and much more to see!DSC_0281Furthermore it was in the small town of Fouras that I spent a day out visiting. Despite being near Rochefort-sur-Mer and La Rochelle, Fort Vauban stands and watches over the city like a lookout.DSC_0286And my tour of Forte Vauban was the morning of winter.   Therefore Fort Vauban and its museum are located at the top of a terrace offers a breath-taking view overlooking the French Atlantic side of the ocean.  As a result on one side of the terrace is where you discover the Forte Boyard in the distance on the ocean.

DSC_0280All in all, the castle of Fouras was fortified in 1672 by Vauban.   And of which it houses the Regional Museum of the city, and the compound.  From the arrival point,  across the wooden bridge is the Maritime Museum. DSC_0278During the world war two the Fort was used as a signal station.  At the same time it also watched over the Estuary of the Charentes.  DSC_0285For one thing In the Medieval era, the fort was the castle of the lords of Rochefort. They used it as a portal or barricade for boats entering the Charentes.   At that time which was seen as the war of religion. And as a consequence in the 15th centurythat saw the destruction of the Castle.

Then came the construction of the dungeon at 30 meters height.  As a result it was built to watch over the ocean from the top of its terrace.  Altogether while the Naval Dockyard of Rochefort was under construction that “Vauban” ordered the fortications of “The Fort Vauban.”  Finally The Fort defended the Charente River and the shipyard of Rochefort for many centuries.DSC_0283Meanwhile the Fort Vauban also caters the Regional Museum of Fouras.  This is  where they exposed the maritime military archeology, arts and seaside history of Fouras-les-Bains.  And you will also find beautiful arts and crafts of today’s artists. DSC_0282For any reason should you one day find yourself in Fouras go climb the terrace of the Fort Vauban.   And try not to miss the amazing view on the estuary.  And together you will discover its islands of Ré, Oleron, Madame, Aix, and its famous Fort Boyard.   However bring your camera to photograph this amazing view that you’ll find nowhere else!DSC_0284

DSC_0279In addition Fouras has a lovely ambience that combines a seaside mood with the charm of a small French town.  The name of the town is Fouras les Bains.  It flashes back to the time when people went there to take ‘sea baths.’ And together lots of their architectures are reminiscent of that time.  Above all this little old town is boasted with beautiful Belle Epoque mansions set in leafy streets.  DSC_0234

DSC_0230On the contrary I shall never forget the seaside village of Fouras.  Next time I surely will try my luck at finding some oysters before I leave.  Aurevoir Fouras, je serais de retour!  A tres bientot!DSC_0232DSC_0229Pictures are my properties, my own words –  defined from how this piece of history was written!
